Political parties and organizations oversaw the management of these parts to run effective campaigns be it at the local, state, or federal level.

Then, about 30 years ago, campaigns began to change with the dawn of the information age. Advanced Information analysis, targeted demographics, and track-able communication strategies were now available to everyone. This coincided with the rise of the independent political consultant. As these two industry changing advancements merged. Specialized Political consultants developed their own applications to utilize these advancements in technology to more efficiently manage the information within their departments. The once simple facits of a campaign, became highly specialized departments left up to the experts.

A few problems arose from this...

Problems that Arose:

First, the boon of information technology created to run campaigns DID bring great advances in the way people managed information. However, all the programs created to carry out different tasks - from tracking a campaign's fundraising, to managing a office's calender, to identifying potential voters - operated independently, without the ability to communicate and work together. Which gave rise to the second problem.

Because each independent and departmentalized program housed the tools necessary to running a competitive campaign, and because each one cost so much to operate all at once, the means to running efficient, effective campaign became a commodity enjoyed only by those individuals, organizations, or candidates that could afford to have it all.

The standard for running a campaign, once a collection of simple parts, became a highly specialized and overpriced campaign methodology available to few.
